Parents:
Students are currently studying the
Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. As we conclude our unit on
Black American studies, your child will be writing their first DBQ essay
of the year. The final due date for the DBQ is Tuesday, Dec. 23,
2003. They will have had the DBQ for one week by this time.
I will assess the content of the paper for
a grade. The students should use social studies vocabulary they have
learned in this unit. The actual writing style is being assessed
only for the purposes of identifying weaknesses and strengths in
writing so that classes can be tailored to student needs.
Students:
Here are a few writing rules for
DBQ's.
1. Type it up. 12 font,
doubled spaced.
2. The length of the paper does not
matter as long as you have answered the question. Some students
write longer papers than others. The main focus of this paper should
be to "evaluate the success or failure of segregationists," or
"evaluate the success or failure of the civil rights
movement." This should be the thesis (opinion) in your
introduction.
3. Which ever idea you go for, recall
that you must discuss 4 things in your essay besides the "success or
failure" mentioned above. You must discuss two laws or actions
taken by segregationists, and two laws or actions taken by civil rights
advocates. This is your opportunity to tie into the documents
provided.
4. Use more than 1/2 of the
documents. That is four documents in this essay. Do not quote
the document or point out what is in the picture. Just discuss it,
and refer to it by it's number or letter. ( For example, Doc. 4 shows
typical segregation in the South during 1900-1960. Blacks were
called "colored" among other derogatory names, and were forced
to use inferior quality facilities compared to white citizens of the
South.
5. For each document, discuss an
outside piece of information. (In document four, you might list
other forms of segregation, such as White only restaraunts, or back of the
bus seating for Blacks. Or you might refer to Plessy v. Fergeson
as the cause for the situation. There are a million facts not
contained in this document. So if the doc. doesn't give you the fact
and you come up with it, it is outside info!
6. Finish your essay by restating
your thesis statement from the introduction, unless you can write a better
one now. Say how you supported your opinion through out the
essay.
7. If you have a better thesis at the
end of your essay than you did in the beginning, go back and improve your
essay's introduction.
