Parents:

Interim report envelopes with Parent signatures are due back to homeroom teachers.  Please sign them and have students bring them in.

Midterm Exams have been returned to students for parent review.  The two parts each require a parent signature to be returned for additional homework credit.

The DBQ portion of the test went very well for my classes.  No one scored lower than a C-, which is amazing!  We will be completing another DBQ in a few weeks with the unit on the American Revolution.

This week students will be looking at the cause and effects of the French and Indian War.  A Thursday/Friday test will pave the way into the American Revolution unit.

Q: Why does Mr. Vititow place cartoons on his website for extra credit?

A:  The skill needed to understand political cartoons is a difficult one, even for high school students.

Like anything else in life, practice helps.

The skill needed here is one that involves deconstructing the cartoon.  That means taking it apart until you are left with pieces.  Each piece has a purpose.  The most important one is content knowledge, which is why I give the most points to that question.

Once you have that knowledge, putting one piece back at a time and trying to explain the significance of it (symbols can be hard, but there are usually several to choose from) begins to become fun, because the artist is having fun making a point about the person or event.

Keep in mind that the Bennett cartoons I use often relate events to common things in our lives.  Often, something is out of place, which is part of what makes the cartoon funny.  Or, it is an analogy.  In today's cartoon, "Social Security reform is to success, as winter ice cream sales are to park/beach  venders."  I hope that helps.
